Our History

  • 1971 – Began with the creation of Neighborhood Legal Aid Society and Metropolitan Richmond Legal Aid Society.
  • 1978 – Creation of the Virginia Farm Workers Legal Assistance Project.
  • 1981 – Merger of Neighborhood Legal Aid Society with Metropolitan Richmond Legal Aid Society.
  • 1990 – Co Director Audrey Franks appointed by the Virginia General Assembly to be a judge of the City of Richmond Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court.  CVLAS and the Virginia Bar Association awarded the Harrison Tweed Award of the American Bar Association for its Pro Bono Hot Line Program.  The hotline at CVLAS is Virginia’s first and largest.
  • 1998 – Staff Attorney Anne Holton appointed by the Virginia General Assembly to be a judge of the City of Richmond Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court.
  • 2000 – Senior Managing Attorney Marilyn Goss awarded the Virginia State Bar’s annual Legal Aid Award.
  • 2001 – Merger of Central Virginia Legal Aid Society – Richmond, with Piedmont Legal Services – Charlottesville and Southside Virginia Legal Services – Petersburg, to form a three office regional CVLAS serving 5 cities and 15 counties in central Virginia.  Central Virginia Legal Aid Society houses the Virginia Farm Workers Legal Assistance Project in Charlottesville.
  • 2005 – Creation of regional telephone intake and intake assistant immediate advice.
  • 2008 – Senior Managing Attorney Marilynn Goss appointed by the Virginia General Assembly to be a judge of the City of Richmond Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court.
  • 2008 – Former Senior Managing Attorney Jay Speer awarded the Virginia State Bar’s annual Legal Aid Award.
  • 2009 – Senior Managing Attorney Freddie Goode awarded the Virginia State Bar’s annual Legal Aid Award.  Former Senior Managing Attorney Marilynn Goss awarded the tradition of excellence Award by the Virginia State Bar’s General Practice Section.
  • 2010 – Stephen Dickinson becomes Executive Director.
  • 2010 – Former Staff Attorney Kathy Pryor awarded the Virginia State Bar’s annual Legal Aid Award.
  • 2012 – CVLAS, in conjunction with Legal Aid Justice Center and the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation, launches the JusticeServer case management system and pro bono referral program.
  • 2013 – CVLAS receives grant from Enroll Virginia! to provide certified Navigators to offer application assistance for the Health Insurance Marketplace (Obamacare).
  • 2014 – Former Staff Attorney Christie Marra awarded the Virginia State Bar’s annual Legal Aid Award.
